Bringing the Leadership Communication Monitor to Life

We recently launched the 2013 Leadership Communication Monitor, a study that polled a group of 6,000 consumers across 12 countries on five continents, and you can download the full report here.

The study is packed with great insights, and in the video below, our CEO, Rob Flaherty, brings some of the findings to life through a hand-drawn graphic approach. And I don’t know about you, but he puts my drawing skills to shame!

Enjoy the video and the findings.

Why I Would Not Go to SXSW

I’m fresh off my first trip to SXSW and it was an enlightening and interesting experience. I was fortunate enough to hear some great keynote speakers, and also attended a fun session with Shaquille O’Neil. We posted insights on the blog all throughout SXSW Interactive and, while there are many reasons to attend the conference, for this post I’m going to share three reasons why I wouldn’t go to SXSW.

Shaq Steals the Show at SXSW & Kisses Brian Solis

I’ve been to some fantastic sessions at SXSW, but the one I attended this afternoon with NBA star Shaquille O’Neal was particularly amazing. He was interviewed by Brian Solis, a well-known media strategist and principal at the Altimeter Group. The session touched on everything from education (did you know Shaq has a master’s degree and PhD?) to business to leadership.

And since it was Shaq, you know there was lots of comedy as well. In fact, from the moment he stepped on stage people were laughing. Why? Because he was carrying Brian Solis on his back!

How Brands Can Stand Out at SXSW

There are two types of brands at SXSW: established and un-established. Both want to capture as much attention as possible, but that’s no easy task.

One way to attempt to do so is by plastering posters on columns. End result? Becoming part of an artistic collage and receiving very little brand awareness.

I’m a SXSW Virgin

I was talking to a friend about SXSW Interactive the other day and mentioned that I was looking forward to going for the first time. He responded, “How in the world have you never gone to SXSW?” I’ve not been avoiding it, but for one reason or another I’ve never made it before until this year.

The conference has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, and some may even argue that it has become a marketing event gotten too big. Without having been before, I obviously can’t say whether it’s too big or not, but I can speak to the fact that the scale of the event requires some planning.

There are hundreds of events taking place over the course of the conference and, from what I’ve gathered, if you don’t plan ahead and figure out what sessions/events/parties you’d like to attend, you’re going to feel lost and overwhelmed. With that said, I’ve mapped out my days to some degree, but have also purposefully left some gaps so that I can wander about and stumble spontaneously on whatever surprises SXSW has to offer.

Have You Overlooked this LinkedIn Page Feature?

LinkedIn has released a number of website updates as of late, and there’s one in particular that has to do with Pages that you don’t want to overlook.

LinkedIn Pages are often excluded from content distribution plans, which is unfortunate given that many pages, especially for larger organizations, can have sizable followings.

But, for the sake of this post, let’s assume using a LinkedIn Page is part of your content distribution plan. The social network has added a targeting feature to all Page updates, and it’s a great way to reach segments of your audience.

Here’s a quick look at the new targeted updates on LinkedIn. Note: click images to enlarge them.

One Reason Why Developing Blog Topics is so Hard

If you’re a long-time blogger you, at some point, have inevitably looked at a blank document on a computer screen and thought to yourself, “I have no idea what I’m going to write about.”

And if you’ve never been a blogger it’s likely you haven’t even fathomed the idea of, you know, sharing your thoughts with all of “those” people on the Internet, let alone knowing what to write about. This is a topic I’ve addressed with a number of individuals during the past few months, and imagine it will continue to come up time and time again.

When the “What do I write about?” question comes up I quickly start brainstorming and within minutes can develop a number of topics for the individual to write about.

GoDaddy.com Hits Crisis Mode

GoDaddy.com crashed on Monday, September 10th, and it took thousands of other sites down with it.

Simply put, GoDaddy.com was hacked and their DNS servers were taken down went down faced an internal error prompting a cascade of crashes. In  layman’s terms, this means if you purchased a domain or host your site with the company, your site was down. Customers were becoming more agitated by the minute, and by 1 pm (Eastern) GoDaddy.com had a full-scale crisis on its hands. My personal websites are hosted with the company, so as a customer my interaction with the site went exactly like this:

Drafting with Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”

There I was browsing Facebook, and with slight amazement, I saw it.

I’m talking about yet ANOTHER parody video of Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit song “Call Me Maybe.”

[WARNING: the song will be stuck in your head by the end of this post.]

The video I saw on Facebook was created by a group of people at the Southern Pines Pilot – the newspaper in Southern Pines, NC. Upon seeing it, I couldn’t help but think, these parody videos have practically made Carly Rae a household name overnight, amplifying her fame far beyond her initial single itself.

Not only have an incredible number of these videos been created, they’ve been shared a ton on the likes of Facebook and Twitter and garnered recognition for the groups creating them.

Cartoons from Cannes

The slides below are from Ketchum’s “Cartoons from Cannes” webinar on July 28 (11 a.m. EST), and are a creative way to share some of the top headlines colleagues took away from the 2012 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

And take note – these aren’t just any old PowerPoint slides. Working with Marketoonist Tom Fishburne, we developed a series of exclusive cartoons that illuminate the top lessons learned at Cannes.
