Yesterday, during his opening remarks at IHS #CERAWeek, Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto spoke of efforts to continue to implement Mexico’s energy reform legislation despite lower oil prices. With great opportunity there can be great risk, and the dramatic overhaul of Mexico’s energy sector over the past year is shaping up to be one of the biggest opportunities for global oil and gas companies in years. It’s also an enormous opportunity for Mexico’s economy and people, if it is communicated and enacted effectively.

Clean Energy Plan Sparks Powerful Opportunities

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced its long-awaited rule to regulate existing power plants and set the framework for state plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Most significantly, the “Clean Power Plan” includes goals to cut carbon emissions from electric power generation by 32 percent by 2030, increase generation from renewables to 28 percent by the same year and gives states and the electric utilities until 2022 to develop final plans to accomplish these goals.

The Evolving Energy Story

Annually, at the end of April, energy experts from around the world gather in Houston, Texas for Cambridge Energy Resources Week (CERA) to discuss industry issues and opportunities, and share their visions of the future. This year, Ketchum Energy simultaneously sponsored an energy communications symposium in Houston in an effort to learn from these energy sector leaders.
