Why Twitter is Trialing 280 Character Tweets

User behaviour, customer service and social insight, are all reasons that Twitter is trialling longer tweets.

Twitter has a problem. It hasn’t seen significant user growth since 2014.

User data for Q2 2017 was flat over the previous quarter at 328 million. The platform needs to increase users in order to increase revenue from advertising.

Twitter has tried a number of different innovations in the past 12 months to drive growth including improved safety; algorithm changes; and removing usernames from the 140 character limit.

The latest change, announced in a tweet by CEO Jack Dorsey last night, sees it trialing tweets of 280 characters.

What The Demise of Vine Really Means for Twitter

Twitter’s move to shutter its Vine service is a big piece of social media news; but not for the reason you might think. Whilst eulogies have flooded in from around the web, celebrating the innovative and genuinely different types of content that Vine introduced to the online world, even the most rose-tinted of obituaries have openly admitted that for those paying close attention, the writing has been on the wall for some time.

Tweeting Right To The Top

Social media does indeed provide platforms to connect with basically anyone. We’ve all heard the success stories about people being socially proactive and having their voices heard by those they would have never have imagined reaching. Why not you?

With more C-Suite executives than ever joining social media and expanding their existing footprint, and a trend toward more direct engagement from industry leaders and brands, now is the right time to follow and reach out to your “dream boss.” Think of all the politicians and celebrities that respond to fans, consumer brands that alter products based on Twitter feedback, the news sources that break live stories with pedestrian-shot socially-sourced photos, etc. A simple tweet or direct message can be the perfect way to connect with someone who would otherwise be out of reach.

Twitter: You’re Doing It Wrong

There’s been much conversation lately about how Twitter is dead, and how nobody clicks anymore and how engagement is a thing of the past. I won’t disagree with the gist of the sentiment, but do you know what I find ironic? The folks leading the debate are the same folks who are killing it. Yup. I’m talking to you – all of you – brands, influencers, media: you’re doing it wrong. But you have the power to restore it back to the glory that it once was. Oh, Twitter circa 2010, how I miss you!

Periscope Up: 15 Tips to Mastering the Platform

Content publishers and brands are broadcasting real-time video and gaining large audiences using Periscope, Twitter’s new live-streaming video publication tool. As communicators, it’s essential that we know how to use platforms like Periscope (and Meerkat) to good effect, both for the brands we represent and our own learning and development.

The use of emerging platforms should always be a component of a healthy integrated marketing mix, (click to tweet) and Periscope can be a great tool for generating awareness and engagement for a host of marketing activities. Your audience wants to be part of your brand activities but, more often than not, can’t be there in person to do so.

Can Twitter Change The World? Day 3 of Social Media Week London

Day three of social media week started with a bang and, yet again, Social Media Week visitors showed a propensity towards early morning tweeting: a spike of conversation at 9am remained untopped throughout the day.

With some diverse events – from food photography to Social Business, and including trends in mobile and teenagers’ use of Social Media – the online chatter remained high on Wednesday but, according to our analysis of key words, largely unchanged. With references to Nokia, live streaming and business remaining in the top 15 words, the only notable addition on Wednesday was “Facebook”- although these references didn’t appear to follow a consistent theme.

Digital Tweets from Ketchum Peeps – Aug 19

As I hunt for tweets from Ketchum employees to share with you each Friday, I tend to take in a lot of information.

One tweet in particular this week took me to a story that had my inner nerd captivated by how a company used social media to “wow” one of their customers/fans. Make sure you read @DavidHeiser’s tweet about Morton’s to learn more on that – it’s quite amazing.

By @JessicaDefilippo “Looks like even #Obama is getting in on the #Foursquare fun! mashable.com/2011/08/15/oba… via @mashable” By @RyanShell “”Abercrombie and Fitch Offers to Pay ‘The Situation’ To Stop Wearing Its Clothes” via @WSJ http://ht.ly/65A3Y” By @DavidHeiser “Nice execution, @Mortons! –> The Greatest Customer Service Story Ever Told, Starring Morton’s Steakhouse – bit.ly/nmHLYE” By @JonathanKopp “Computer users, here’s an infographic that’s easy on your eyes — literally. bit.ly/p75c1j #ketchum #digital” By @MylesTW Very smart social marketing — Starbucks Fans Compete To Bring Pumpkin Spice Lattes to Their Cities First mashable.com/2011/08/18/sta
